SESSIONS (Intermediate & Advanced Level Clinics - 3 hours) 

 

Sessions is all about doing - and doing it a lot - meaning less talk and a whole lot of guided practice! These clinics are aimed at the Intermediate to Advanced rider that is looking to expand their skill set and push their riding to the next level. For beginner clinics, check Weekend Fundamentals.

WHEELIES - One Wheel Magic!  

If you ever envied that kid in the neighborhood that could wheelie for days, but you felt that doing it yourself was out of reach - then we're here to tell you - your day has come. In this clinic, we'll be delving deep into the dark art that is riding with your front wheel in the air. We'll talk briefly about bike set-up and bike geometry and how this affects the bike. Then, we'll practice skills that will give you the confidence to initiate and maintain control when riding on 1 wheel. This clinic is not to be missed. Be there, or hate yourself every time that 12 year-old neighbor kid passes by your house. This is a 2 hour intermediate/advanced level clinic and is limited to 6 people. See below for times.

 

STEEPS - NEW THIS SEASON!

If the thought of going down steep hills fills you with dread, then this just might be the exposure therapy you need. In STEEPS, we'll be working with getting more comfortable riding down steep trail. We'll build on the body positioning and braking work we did in Basics, and we'll build on our skills with rolls that we worked on in DROPS 1 and also touch on skills for turning on steeps or turning immediately after steep downhills. This is a 4 hour intermediate/advanced level clinic and is limited to 6 people. See below for times. Note: Clinics scheduled for Tuesdays on the calendar are split between Tuesday and the following Thursday. 

 

JUMPING PROGRAM

 

Sessions Clinics Format Change for 2018

The 2 hour clinic - 1 hour break -  2 hour clinic format I ran last year for Jumping and Drops programs was very productive, but doesn't fit into the schedule this year. That said, I am always searching for the best format for introducing and practicing jumping and drops. So this season, Jumping 1 and 2 (as with Drops 1 and 2) will be combined into a 3 hour clinic on weekend and an optional follow up guided practice day on Wednesday or Thursday evening. This means that students will get 3 hours of instruction on the weekend and 1.5 hours during the following week for just $118! We recommend that you take both Jumping 1 and 2 or Drops 1 and 2 together, but if you would prefer to take Jumping 1 or Drops 1 only, we can do that. Cost for Jumping 1 or Drops 1 would be $75. Jumping 1 - PUMPING and JUMPING  (Note: Taught as a combo with Jumping 2, but can be taken separately by request)

If you have considered trying to get your wheels off the ground, but you're not sure where to start, then this is for you. In this no pressure atmosphere, you will get the basics on body movement as well as "The Rules", Mike's guidelines to best avoid crashing as you learn to jump. No previous experience necessary with jumping or the dirt jump park required, but some measure of confidence with bike handling will be needed. (If you feel reasonably comfortable riding trail, that's enough.)  Not sure if you have the prerequisite skills? Give us a call or send and email. Jumping 2 - REFINING the SKILLS

Once you understand the basic movements required for jumping your bike. Next up is building the muscle memory to do it consistently. In this clinic, we’ll continue working with jumping, cleaning up body position and timing problems as well as discussing the “point of no return” and how this ties into jumping gaps. This begins the skills qualification part of my jumping program. Students will leave with an assessment of jumping skills that they can use as a guide for their practice. Jumping 1 and 2 are taught as combo with a 3 hour clinic You can also choose to take Jumping 2 only, as practice if you've taken Jumping 1 previously. See "Sessions Clinics Format Change" above for more info. 

Jumping 3 - MIND the GAP      The next class will be Saturday afternoon, July 28th 2018! 

You say you’ve been jumping for awhile, but you’re still struggling with gaps? In this class we’ll build skills for assessing gaps including how to accurately measure jump length, how to determine if a jump is likely to buck and how to line up a jump for the first time. There is a lot of highly useful information here, so if you're starting to push yourself doing gaps, you won't want to miss this! This 3. hour clinic will be taught at Galbraith Mountain. Jumping 3 will be limited to 6 people. Cost of clinic is $170. Please note, you must meet the requirements for Jumping 3 and have taken Jumping 1 and 2 previously. Registration is NOT done on this website. Jumping 3 Requirements:

  • Must first take Jumping 1 and Jumping 2 to be considered eligible for Jumping 3.

  • Demonstrate the ability to "pop" with legs without rotating from side to side, forward (endo) or back (loop out).

  • Be consistent with timing the pop 9 out of 10 times with minimal error.

DROPS AND ROLLS PROGRAM

DROPS 1 - Drops and Rolls (Note: Taught as a combo with Drops 2, but can be taken separately by request.)

Feel pretty good about your trail riding prowess, but you want learn to get over more difficult features or even maybe get your wheels off the ground? In this Weekend Fundamentals clinic we'll start with some basics such as body position and braking and then move to breaking down the movements required for negotiating roll-downs (steep drop-offs that can be rolled) and drops (drop-offs that can't be rolled). We won't be getting too crazy here, but if you want to learn to drop or roll features on the trail this is the place to do it. And if you are used to doing bigger drops, but you find yourself landing off-axis or out of control, this will help! Drops 1 and 2 are taught as combo with a 3 hour clinic on Sundays and an optional 2 hour guided practice clinic the following week. You can also choose to take Drops 1 only. See "Sessions Clinics Format Change" above for more info. 

DROPS 2 - Refining the Skills (Note: Taught as a combo with Drops 1, but can be taken separately by request, if Drops 1 has been taken previously.)

After all of the success that we've had with Jumping 2: REFINING this SKILLS, we've decided to do the same with drops and expand the program. Whereas DROPS 1 is an introduction to the skills for drops and rolls, DROPS 2 is your opportunity to practice, so you'll have the confidence to use them out on the trails! Students will receive two hours of intensive practice with feedback from the instructor, video review and at least 15 minutes of personal time.  Expect significant gains in skill and confidence in this clinic. Jumping 1 and 2 are taught as combo with a 3 hour clinic on Saturdays or Sundays. You can also choose to take Drops 2 only practice, if you've taken Drops 1 previously. See "Sessions Clinics Format Change" above for more info. 

DROPS 3 - Full Commitment Drops

We'll be starting where we left off with Drops 2. I'll do a short explanation of the techniques we talked about and then we'll do some drops and rolls using those techniques with the drop set at a good height for warming up (less than 1'). After some time spent working with the drop at this height and getting comfortable, we'll discuss assessing a drop and the "point of no return." Then we'll raise the height slightly to get used the sensation of a committed drop. Once comfortable at this height we'll adjust again and so on. This 3.5 hour clinic is limited to 6 people. Please note, You must take DROPS 1 and 2 and pass DROPS 2 before taking this clinic.
